Emory University's transforming community project, run by history professor Leslie Harris, has a very exciting conference coming up in early February on slavery and universities. There will be much talk about the antebellum university — about proslavery (and antislavery) thought at universities and universities' ownership of human beings, as well as accounting for that legacy. Here is the program. President Ruth Simmons of Brown University will deliver the keynote and there is an exciting line-up of historians talking about work at many different institutions. The conference homepage is here and the conference poster is here.
There are so many images that I might use to illustrate this, but I've chosen a WPA photograph of Southern University in Greensboro, Alabama.
