Oscar Countdown: Day 27

Kidsalright The Kids are All Right has been nominated for a number of Oscars this year.  It tells the story of a lesbian couple raising a family and the introduction of the initial sperm donor into their lives when their children are older teenagers.  Annette Bening has been nominated for the Best Actress Oscar with respect to her role as half of the gay couple.  If she were to win, she would be the fifth non-gay performer to win either the Best Actor or Best Actress Oscar for playing a gay character since 2000.  Name the other four winners.  (At least one of the four characters is perhaps less obvious than the others  and is technically bisexual although the major homosexual relationship in this person's life is relatively well-known.)

Working off of my question from yesterday, one would be Phillip Seymour Hoffman in "Capote."

Yes, most definitely. That's one down – Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Capote…

Sean Penn as Harvey Milk in Milk.

  4. Joe

    Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth.

(Just kidding. I think the "less obvious" one is Charlize Theron for that serial killer lady.)

Never mind, I missed the post 2000 part. Philadelphia is much older than that.

Difficult question! Not sure about this one… but what about Nicole Kidman as Virginia Woolf?

  7. Jacqueline Lipton

    Yep, that's all of them.
Tom Hanks doesn't count because Philadelphia was pre-2000.
The others were Charlize Theron (Monster), Nicole Kidman (The Hours), and Sean Penn (Milk). Colin Firth was also nominated for A Single Man but did not win.

If we do away with the 2000 limit, William Hurt won best actor for playing a gay prisoner in Brazil in Kiss of the Spider Woman in 1985.
