The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law is seeking candidates to lead our field placement program. This is a benefit-eligible, non-tenure track position. This position is eligible for a presumptively renewable long-term contract and will begin in Spring 2024. A J.D. or equivalent degree is required. We especially welcome applications from candidates who would add diversity to our faculty.
UMKC School of Law hosts a premier field placement program, which complements our nine direct legal services clinics. The Law School is highly regarded for the training opportunities it provides students in lawyering skills and live practice. The field placement program has rich collaborations with federal and state courts, federal, state, and city agencies, and non-profit organizations, in both Missouri and Kansas. Kansas City is a federal city, home to the regional headquarters for an expansive array of federal agencies (Region 7).
The job duties for the Clinical Professor/Director of Field Placement Programs position include:
- Designing, teaching, and organizing curriculum for the field placement program and companion seminars;
- Approving and evaluating all host offices and training and supervising mentor attorneys;
- Approving all student internships and monitoring student experiences during field placements;
- Setting policies and maintaining systems to run the program, including coordinating with various Law School offices such as the Dean of Students, Law Registrar, and the Career and Professional Development Center; and
- Enriching field placement pedagogy and curriculum to ensure that students are provided with a robust education in Bias, Cultural Competency and Racism, and Professional Identity Formation, as well as compliance with other ABA requirements for experiential learning.
The School of Law seeks applications from those with a strong commitment to educating lawyers for the twenty-first century and who desire to join a collegial, innovative, collaborative community. We are particularly interested in candidates with the ability to establish and maintain strong community ties and with experience in managing legal collaborations, supervising legal work of others, mentoring, and teaching in formal and informal settings.
Requirements for the position include a Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school or equivalent. The law school has some flexibility regarding the subject-matter expertise of candidates, but the ability to contribute in the areas of entrepreneurship, litigation/advocacy, child and family law, intellectual property law, urban or environmental law, or criminal law would be beneficial.
UMKC is the urban law school of the University of Missouri System and is located on a beautifully landscaped campus in the Plaza District of Kansas City, Missouri.
