OK – so this is me just being frivolous because I can see the end of the semester in sight.
I've always been both amused and irritated by all those acronyms for university departments that are bandied about, and I think that if we're going to have acronyms for these departments, they should be more fun.
Take, for example, the ever-present departments to assist with teaching and learning resources that most universities have. Some of the acronyms for these offies at universities I've worked at include:
CHED (Center for Higher Education Development)
HEARU (Higher Eucation and Research Unit)
UCITE (University Center for Innovation in Teaching and Education)
Now, granted these are all fine for what they are, but I've always thought I'd prefer an education office called something more like ERECTILE (Educational Resources for Effective Classroom Teaching in Learning Environments). Of course, it would have to be staffed with DYSFUNCTIONAL faculty…
And what about ITCH (Information Technology Central Hub), rather than the more boring "Central IT Services".
Any other thoughts for more amusing university acronyms??? Please add them below…
The acronym for the central administration of the entire University of California is UCOP (University of California Office of the President). So far as I know, they are not issued batons or Tasers.
At FIU, the University wanted to combine the School of Social Work, Departments of Criminal Justice, Health Sciences, Public Administration, and Dietetics/Nutrition into a single school. It would be the College of Health and Urban Affairs and Applied Social Science (CHUAASS–you have to say it out loud).
