Weekend Links

. . . are mostly sad:

Tim Zinnecker
(here at the Faculty Lounge) and Elizabeth
Nowicki
(at Concurring Opinions) on the death of Tulane law professor Brooke
Overby (1960-2009).

Larry
Solum
(at Legal Theory Blog) and Chris
Bertram
(at Crooked Timber) on the death of Gerald A. (Jerry) Cohen (1941–2009).

And via Brian
Leiter
, news of the
death of Stanford Emeritus Professor John H. Barton (1936-2009).

Let’s hope that next week brings better news for the
Academy.

And on a lighter note
. . .

Ben Stein is fired as a Sunday business columnist for the
New York Times for violating ethics guidelines, due to his role as a commercial
spokesman for FreeScore, a financial services company.  (HT: Gawker
via Felix
Salmon
).  Here’s one of the
offending commercials:

At the Volokh Conspiracy, David Bernstein challenges
the New York Times on its assessment of the position of Supreme Court Justice as
one of the “most demanding jobs in the land.”  Yep, right up there with law school professor . . .

And Usha
Rodrigues
has better taste in teen movies than Larry Ribstein (his considerable expertise on capitalism in film notwithstanding).
