Feminist law professor Ann Bartow asks whether Lucia Whalen
(aka the “lady who called 911”) should
also get a beer
.  That might
make Al
happy
, but I vote that we forget the Bud Lite and non-alcoholic brews, and
suggest a much more interesting list of summer mixed drinks for Ms.
Whalen.  Two of my local favorites:  Lateblossom

Luksusowa vodka, Lillet Blanc, lychee juice and orange
flower water, and

Hot Date

Jujube preserves, Gentleman Jack, cayenne, and lemon

Suggest your own favorite cocktails, preferably with a recipe, link, or ingredient list, in the comments, so that we can force resident mixologist Mark Weidemaier to make it for us.

How about a Corpse Reviver #3? It's vaguely like a Cosmopolitan, but made for someone who actually likes the taste of alcohol: 1 part each of brandy or cognac, campari, and cointreau and 1/2 part lemon juice. Serve up. Nice!

Or a Rosita – like a margarita, but better: 1.5 oz tequila, 1/2 oz each sweet vermouth, dry vermouth, and campari, and a dash of angostura bitters.

Or for a true summer drink, a nice, frosty Bermuda Swizzle, made, as God intended, at the Clover Club: http://www.cloverclubny.com/category/menu/

That may be the coolest on-line drink menu I've ever seen. I'm also relieved to hear that God intends me to go to New York for summer cocktails, since Chapel Hill (lovely as it is) can be hot and boring this time of year.

I almost never drink cocktails- If I'm drinking liquor I usually take it neat, so I don't have any cocktails to offer. But, I'll suggest sipping on a nice small glass of 44 north Rocky Mountain Huckleberry Vodka:

Chill in the freezer and then pour. It's great sipping vodka and has a strong, clear, huckleberry taste. It's almost as good as a nice slice of huckleberry pie, and one of the best products of my home state.

Ohh — that looks fun. I'll have to see if it's available here. North Carolina has this horrible, highly regulated ABC system under which (or so the liquor store owners tell me every time I complain) they have some master list that they order from. So unusual liquors or those without a wide customer base here aren't available sometimes. So if any Loungers are already contemplating what to get me as a holiday gift, liquor from elsewhere is always welcome.

My first comment in forever is a cocktail recipe. Lovely.
I had a couple of very interesting cocktails at the Chicago Art Institute this past week. They were all made with fresh herbs. The one I remember was made by first muddling some fresh tarragon with two fresh cherries and a lime wedge. Add some ice, a small dose of cherry puree, 1.5 oz tequila and a splash of elderflower liqueur (this may be hard to find, but incredible stuff) and shake. Sounds strange – -but it was fantastic.

Not to worry James — we like to think of the Lounge as a place where every professor can embrace his or her inner slacker. Sounds like a great drink. Sounds even better at the Art Institute.
