South Carolina Statehouse Monuments: The Confederate Soldier

PA310041 Continuing on my series of posts on the monuments around the South Carolina statehouse, it's time to talk about the Confederate monument.  It was put up in 1879–just after the end of Reconstruction, during the era that was once known as the period of "Redemption."  (As in, the south was redeemed from the Yankees, African Americans, and scalawags who held sway from 1865 to 1877, more or less.)

Below the fold are a couple of other pictures of the monument, including close-ups of the inscriptions on the front and back.
