Oscar Countdown: Day 17

Miniver Today's question:  Several films have received four or more "acting" nominations, but only two films have won more than two acting Oscars.  Name the two films.

Pictured:  Mrs. Miniver (1942), which earned five acting nominations (tied for the record).  Two nominees won:   Greer Garson (Best Actress) and Teresa Wright (Best Supporting Actress).

I think "All About Eve" might qualify.

I know that one is "A Streetcar Named Desire," with the surprise being that Marlon Brando was not one of them (he lost Best Actor to Humphrey Bogart in "The African Queen," my father's favorite movie). But Karl Malden, Vivien Leigh, and Kim Hunter all won.

Isn't it interesting how so many of the films we've discussed are at least 50 years old?

NETWORK is indeed the other film, tying the record with five nominations and taking home three trophies for its acting (Peter Finch [posthumous], Faye Dunaway, and Beatrice Straight). See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074958/awards

For a list of films that have garned four or more nominations for actresses / actors, see http://www.filmsite.org/oscars2.html#3

As for Kelly's observation, some of us might conclude "they don't make 'em like they used to!"

But was this really a sufficiently rigorous Oscar question for the day given that we already identified Network a couple of days ago as a film that had more than two acting nominations.

NETWORK seems to be a common link in our trivia questions. In addition to Jacqui's observation, recall that we have previously noted that NETWORK is one of four films to win the top two acting prizes but lose the Best Picture award to another film.

With all of these links to other films, "Network" appears to be the "Kevin Bacon" of film trivia. 😉
