I'm pleased to pass on the news that the
26th annual meeting of the Southern Intellectual History Circle will convene at
the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville on Thursday afternoon 20 February
2014. Rachael DeLue, Professor of American Art at Princeton University,
will deliver the keynote address on regionalism and American art in the Great
Hall of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville on Friday
afternoon 21 February. The meeting will also feature work on 20th century writers and journalists by Sarah
Gardner of Mercer University; John Shelton Reed of the University of North Carolina;
and Jennifer Ritterhouse of George Mason University. A second panel will
address 20th century Arkansas politics with papers by John Kirk of theUniversity of
Arkansas, Little Rock; Story Matkin-Rawn of the University of Central Arkansas; and
Michael Pierce of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.
Information regarding the program, registration, and local arrangements will be
posted to SIHC's
Facebook page later this fall. I've been hoping to take in Crystal Bridges for some time now and I hope to make it to the conference. They have a lot of art I'm interested in (like Asher Durand's Kindred Spirits) and I still hold out hope that his Progress will surface there someday.
