The a licensing panel of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education deferred today's scheduled vote on whether to recommend approval of InfiLaw's acquisition of Charleston School of Law. The panel apparently received additional material this week and will hold a special meeting May 19 instead.
Earlier this week, a Commission staff report recommended approval of the acquisiton by the Florida-based for-profit company. Charleston Law is a free-standing, for-profit law school now but many Charleston stakeholders – including some current students, alumni and local lawyers – oppose the sale. Many of these people have pushed for a South Carolina state institution to acquire the school.
The Commission itself will make the final call, presumably at its June 5, 2014 meeting.
