Barnard and Slavery

Amidst all the excellent discussion of Columbia University and slavery, it may be time to talk about Barnard College's connection to slavery.  This connection is more oblique — because Barnard was founded after the Civil War.  Barnard is named for Frederick Barnard, who before the War was a professor at Alabama and later Chancellor of the University of Mississippi.  While at Mississippi, he expelled a student who had attacked one of his female slaves. There's more to this story in University, Court, and Slave.
