If I were King of the "North" or maybe Governor of Illinois, as a gesture of good faith to the "South," I would tear down US Grant's joint in Galena and any statuary commemorating him. What awful things to come out of that era. In 2157, there will likely be bloggers and op ed authors who write the same things about our era.
Instead of tearing down these old statues, why not build a new monument to honor the victims of slavery? (In reply to the mayor, I would tell my daughter (who is half black) that Robert E Lee was on the wrong side of history … just as our founding fathers were for compromising with slavery in the first place.
If monuments are to record great events of the past, Admiral Farragut is probably more entitled than any military man to have a statue erected in New Orleans. My knowledge of Civil War events is somewhat dated but I cannot recall any major events of that era that ties Lee to New Orleans. It is a long way from Virginia to New Orleans.
