On this day in 1898 the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana Harbor.
Red Patterson and His Piedmont Log Rollers recorded "Battleship of Maine" in 1927, by which time it was evidently safe to perform an anti-war song. It was their most famous cut (which wasn't hard to accomplish, as they only released one other record):
