"Under the Boardwalk" was written by Artie Resnick and Kenny Young (real name Shalom Giskan, born in Jerusalem) for The Drifters in 1964. Clyde McPhatter and Ben E. King had already left the group by then, and the new lead singer, Rudy Lewis, died of a suspected heroin overdose the night before the recording session. The lead vocal was taken over by Johnny Moore, which explains why there are only three Drifters in the first video, which was made shortly after the initial release that May.
