The University of Miami invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Law. We seek a dean who is an experienced administrator in legal education, an innovative thinker, a community builder on a hemispheric scale, a seasoned fundraiser, and an inspiring leader who 1) welcomes the opportunity to articulate a vision for the law school that builds upon its rich history and 2) is ready to face the challenges of modern legal education and lead the law school forward in the twenty-first century.

The Law School
The University of Miami School of Law, located on the 239-acre main campus, has over 100 faculty members and an enrollment of about 1200 students. The curriculum of the juris doctor (JD) degree includes the teaching of diverse subject areas at the highest levels of excellence, with a faculty devoted to teaching, researching, and advancing the art and practice of the law. The JD curriculum also includes award-winning clinical programs, a nationally-recognized litigation skills program, a newly-created transactional skills program, and externship opportunities for the development of legal skills. The law school’s large network of alumni, as well as its international profile, has resulted in a diverse assortment of high-quality adjunct course offerings.
In addition to the JD degree, the law school offers a range of graduate programs including its nationally ranked tax LLM program and its innovative LLM program in entertainment, arts and sports law. The law school also has trained thousands of international students and foreign lawyers to practice in the public and private sectors in the United States. The law school offers joint degrees with several of the University’s graduate schools and has partnerships with higher education institutions around the world.
Dean of the Law School
The Dean, reporting to the Executive Vice President & Provost, is the law school’s chief academic officer with overall responsibility for its academic programs, operating budget, personnel management, strategic planning, public relations, and fundraising. The Dean is also the law school’s principal representative to the University, alumni, and the legal community.
The law school is seeking a person with a national and international reputation, demonstrated administrative experience in legal education, preferably at the level of dean, enthusiasm for the law school and the larger University community, and vision to lead the faculty. The next Dean must have the academic and professional credentials to engender respect from the academy, the University, and the global community at large. The law school is home to an interdisciplinary group of creative, committed, and caring scholars who are recognized nationally and globally as dedicated researchers, practitioners, and legal commentators. The candidate should be able to strengthen the law school by encouraging and supporting first-rate scholarship, developing innovative programs, and engaging with both the local and hemispheric community.
The successful candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal, managerial and leadership skills, and be able to foster an internal culture of excellence. The position requires an individual who can lead effectively and manage a large and dynamic school in a multi-campus research university. Candidates must have the professional background appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of professor. Leadership experience with responsibility for strategic management of personnel, programs, and resources is strongly desired.
