"Love Me Tender" was a number one hit for Elvis Presley in 1956, the same year it was featured in Elvis's first movie, also called Love Me Tender. The melody was taken from the Civil War era ballad "Aura Lea" (also called "Aura Lee"), with new lyrics by Ken Darby, though attributed, for reasons never explained, to his wife Vera Matson. As performed on the Ed Sullivan show that same year, "Love Me Tender" began Presley's transition from rockabilly to pop. The choice of "Aura Lea" for the melody was appropriate for the movie, which was set in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War. Don't miss the film clip at the bottom of this post.

The irony being, of course, that Senator McCarthy was largely correct. Had the people and institutions been more vigilant, American would be a healthy, safer, stronger, better educated, and less banana republican country than it is today. It's too bad the critical theorists weren't hauled before HUAC.
It would also be fun to ask Professor Karl why she, a scholar of communist China and Mao, really champions the international legal rules that she does. Not that you could get the truth out of her through open dialogue…
On the other hand, there are credible grounds to consider institutions on university campuses to be fronts for other countries, such as for Qatar, Iran, and China. Is the accusation of "dual loyalty" unproblematic in these cases because the institutions and academics clearly have no loyalty to the United States whatsoever?
One hastens to add that it seems perfectly legitimate, especially in light of Rashid Khalidi's book, to ask whether the Palestinian identity isn't anything much more than a 20th century political ideology.
A nice conversation could then be had about the cultural appropriation of Jewish ideas, holy sites, and locations, and efforts at cultural erasure in the name of the imperialist conquerors who spread the new faith out of Mecca.
A nice long, public chat about the Pact of Omar and its relationship to apartheid would also be lovely.
