Cooley Law School invites applications from entry-level and lateral candidates for a tenure-track faculty position to teach research and writing at our Lansing, Michigan, campus.
Cooley, a private, nonprofit school, has an access mission with a practical focus on lawyering skills. It has produced more than 300 judges, and its graduates include current and former members of Congress, a multi-term governor, and state-bar presidents in multiple states. Our alums have also been welcomed into prestigious academic posts, including professorships at law schools and graduate programs across the nation.

Location. The hired professor will teach at Cooley’s Lansing, Michigan, campus.
Requirements. Successful candidates must have a juris doctor or equivalent degree and be admitted to at least one state bar. Candidates should have a distinguished academic record and show either exceptional promise or an established record of excellence in scholarship and teaching.
Duties. The new professor will teach two sections per term, three terms per year, from a menu of four required writing courses: Research & Writing I, Research & Writing II, Advocacy, and Writing for Practice. The professor may also have opportunities to cover electives such as Scholarly Writing or Drafting.
We have a healthy culture of faculty governance, so the new professor should expect to participate in committee work and will have immediate opportunities for leadership roles.
Salary. Between $84,000 and $152,000. Salary will depend on experience. We will consider applicants of every experience level and will consider conferring tenured status immediately subject to approval by the voting faculty if the new hire enjoys that status at another school or brings extensive experience or standing in the field.
Contract. We teach year-round, so expect a regular summer term. (Faculty members have breaks for most of December, April, and August.)
Start date. We anticipate that the candidate will begin in January, May, or August 2027.
Status. All writing faculty at Cooley are on the tenure track. Cooley’s doctrinal faculty members hold the writing faculty in the highest regard, treating us as professional equals in every respect and valuing scholarship on all aspects of legal research and writing.
