As I argued , a lateral candidate should do his or her best to make direct contact with target law schools. Even entry level candidates with particular regional or school preferences may be well served by using direct applications as a supplement to the AALS faculty recruiting process. I'll echo Dan's suggestion that entry-level candidates not rely solely on the FAR form but also contact the hiring chair at a school of interest. Speaking as a former committee chair, I can testify that on more than one occasion we scheduled an interview in DC only after reviewing a cover letter and supplemental materials submitted by a candidate via regular mail or email.
And also speaking as a former hiring chair (and hopefully not one again this year although we haven't yet named our hiring chair at Case), I would recommend that even entry level folks see if a senior professor from their school could contact hiring chairs at schools they may be particularly interested in. Hiring chairs are bombarded with unsolicited CVs from both entry level and lateral people. If first contact is made not by the candidate herself, but by a respected faculty member, it goes a long way towards drawing the candidate more squarely to the committee's attention. If you are sending unsolicited CVs yourself to hiring chairs, I would also recommend that you try to add something to the cover letter/email to show a particular interest in the school in question so it doesn't look like you are sending "form" letters to all schools (even though we know you really are). Some schools may discard applications that look too "rote" because they will assume that the candidate may not have a particular interest in hearing back from them – so your time and effort doesn't buy you much more than just having your generic CV in the AALS book.

Some schools may abandon applications that attending too "rote" because they will accept that the applicant may not accept a accurate absorption in audition aback from them.
