Every law school career planning office wants to help students find summer work. For many 1L's, a summer internship – albeit unpaid – is a good choice. So it was for Leo Wolpert, law student at UVa. He's doing a summer internship at the ACLU of Nevada. But summer money is always a challenge for folks like Leo. So rather than seeking out summer stipends from foundations or submitting a great essay to win the National Dairy Law Writing Competition, Leo borrowed a few grand from a friend and entered the World Series of Poker. And a couple of days later he emerged a winner, with $650,000 in his pocket. That's more money than a Wachtell summer associate. Shoot. That's more money than a Supreme Court clerk bonus! Barely. The next day, a little richer, he returned to his desk at the ACLU – driving his 2000 Toyota Camry.
And yes. The news is on UVa's law school home page today. Makes for some powerful recruiting!
When I was in law school a student a year behind me at Penn (I didn't know him) won $1,000,000 in the world series of poker, for taking, I think, 8th place. There was a press release and an article in the Penn newspaper:
