Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities. December 1 was World AIDS Day. There are many other "international days" that you may have marked on your calendar for the coming year:
World Cancer Day (February 4), World Day of Social Justice (February 20), International Mother Language Day, (February 21), World Musical Freedom Day (March 3), International Women's Day (March 8), International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (March 21), World Water Day (March 22), World Meteorological Day (March 23), World Tuberculosis Day (March 24), World Press Freedom Day (May 3), World Asthma Day (May 3), World Athletics Day (May date TBD), World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day (May 8), International Nurses Day (May 12), International Day of Families (May 15), World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development (May 17), World Information Society Day (May 21), International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22), World No-Tobacco Day (May 31), World Environment Day (June 5), World Oceans Day (June 8), World Refugee Day (June 20), International Day in Support Victims of Torture (June 26), International Day of Cooperatives (July 2), International Youth Day (August 11), International Literacy Day (September 8), International Day of Democracy (September 15), International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer (September 16), World Vegetarian Day (October 1), International Day for Older Persons (October 1), World Farm Animals Day (October 2), World Habitat Day (October 3), World Space Week (October 4-10), World Teachers' Day (October 5), World Post Day (October 10), Global Handwashing Day (October 15), World Pasta Day (October 25), Universal Children's Day (November 20), World Television Day (November 21), International Day for the Abolition of Slavery (December 2), International Mountain Day (December 11), and International Migrants Day (December 18).
And there are more that I haven't listed (see here and here).
Before I go any further, I should lay bare my many biases:
- I love democracy, water and literacy.
- I have nothing against social justice, mother languages, musical freedom, women, press freedom, athletics, red crosses or crescents, nurses, families, cultural diversity (with or without dialogue and development), biological diversity, children, the environment, oceans, refugees, victims of torture, cooperatives, youth, the ozone layer, vegetarians, older persons, farm animals, space, teachers, habitat, handwashing, pasta, mountains and migrants.
- I have mixed feelings about things meteorological, information societies, the post and television.
But how many special days can a busy law prof observe? Can't we all agree that cancer is bad and use that day, at least, for something else?
All of your priors seem reasonable, with the obvious exceptions of water and democracy.
I smiled when I saw that "world space" is accorded six extra days!
