The folks at ATL got hold of a job posting from the law firm K&L Gates. The firm's recruiting administrator requests candidates submit not only the usual stuff - cover letter, transcript and writing sample – but their LSAT scores as well. I can't say I'm shocked. I suspect that LSAT scores are of particular interest to firms who recruit from non-super elite schools. Deep down, some employers don't really believe law school grades; they want people with high a IQ and they consider the LSAT a superior proxy. And it's not just law firms. I remember being taken aback when I was interviewing for clerkships and a Judge on the 9th Circuit asked me this very question. Apparently my numbers didn't measure up – but it was a blessing. Nobody in the world regrets having the chance to clerk for the wonderful Judge J. Dickson Phillips Jr.!
Back when I was applying for clerkships, one judge asked for my LSAT score and my SAT scores.
I think that I may have mentioned this on a prior guest post that I wrote, but one time a law firm actually asked me to provide my high school class rank. In another interview the attorney started out the meeting by immediately asking me what my parents did for a living. So many odd questions and actions in law firm interviews….
