According to a breaking story in Philadelphia's Legal Intelligencer, Wolf Block – or WolfBlock, if you take their PR seriously – is about to dissolve. If this story proves correct, and I can't say I'd be surprised, this would mark both a major blow to legal practice in Philly, and the loss of some local cultural history. The firm is a big player in the city's legal marketplace today with roughly 300 attorneys, albeit not in the league of the Dechert or Morgan, Lewis. But its history remains notable. Wolf Block was the major "Jewish law firm" in town for many years. In the days before many large firms were comfortable hiring Jewish law grads, Wolf Block was a go-to destination for well credentialed Jewish lawyers entering practice in Philadelphia. The firm has been struggling in recent years, it seems, having entered unsuccessful merger talks several times.
