Oscar Countdown: Day 25

Truegrit Today's question comes from Lance McMillian:

Jeff Bridges is nominated for Best Actor this year for his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn in True Grit.  John Wayne won his first and only Oscar for the same portrayal in 1970.  Wayne was nominated for two other Oscars during his career.   Name these two other nominations (film and category).

Great topic for today! I re-watched The Godfather II last night, and thought of a related question. Is Vito Corleone the only movie character that has inspired two acting Oscars for two different actors? (Marlon Brando for Best Actor and Robert DeNiro for Best Supporting Actor).

Just realize that your question is a different one, Ben. Should have read it more closely. Sorry about that.

It's a little different, but the same subject. I didn't know that about Henry VIII! Thanks for the response.

Although The Searchers is generally considered Wayne's best film and perhaps the greatest western of all-time, Wayne was not nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Ethan Edwards. Indeed, the film shockingly received no Oscar nominations at all.

What about Wayne having been possibly nominated for Best Supporting Actor in Stage Coach?

The Alamo (1960) — Best Picture nomination (John Wayne, producer).

Stagecoach is not right, although that is the film that made Wayne a star. Tim is right about The Alamo, for which Wayne received a nomination not as an actor, but a producer. He also was the director of The Alamo.

Here's a hint for the other nomination. Like The Alamo, this film centers around a real historical event.

THE QUIET MAN is not correct, although it's one of my favorite JW movies. Perhaps surprisingly, neither Wayne nor Maureen O'Hara were nominated. John Ford, though, did walk home with the Best Director trophy.

The other answer is Wayne's Best Actor nomination for The Sands of Iwo Jima.
