Before I depart the southern Atlantic for a gulf coast state, I thought I'd clear out a couple of trivia questions. This is a building I've been waiting a long time to take a picture of. Some years ago when I was working on a short piece on the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as a fulcrum moment in property rights I was reading a bunch of the anti-Civil Rights Act literature. One of the key organizations opposing the CRA was housed in this building. (So while this is a trivia question related to the Civil Rights Era, the building housed an organization that was designed to stop, or at least majorly slow down, the movement.) Where is this building and what was the organization?
I'm sure I'm not making this too easy by saying that I once worked in the same block as this building.
That's Capitol Place in Richmond, VA. It once housed the VA Democratic Party. And it's next to the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
You're, of course, right, Jason. The organization I was thinking of was the Virginia Commission on Constitutional Government. They published a number of pamphlets opposing the CRA (and federal intervention in civil rights more generally).
