In My Life

There is no doubt that John Lennon wrote the lyrics to "In My Life," after discarding an earlier and more mundane version, but there is some disagreement about the music.  Lennon said that he wrote the melody, while McCartney contributed only the harmony and the bridge. In a later interview, however, McCartney claimed credit for the entire song. It was Brian Epstein George Martin, however, who came up with the piano part, which was sped up to sound like a harpsichord. In any case, Lennon regarded "In My Life," which was released in 1965 on Rubber Soul, as his "first major piece of work." I doubt that anyone of a certain age can listen to it without tearing up a little (maybe nobody can).
