Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote many of the most memorable hits of the 1950s and 1960s, most notably for The Coasters and Elvis Presley, and for many other significant artists as well. Their songs have been covered countless times. Here is a partial selection in chronological order of the first releases.
Kansas City (Beatles cover of Willie Littlefield original) :
Hound Dog (Elvis Presley cover of Big Mama Thornton original)
Searchin'
Love Potion Number Nine
Saved (LaVerne Baker original; audio only)
Stand By Me (lip sync)
I'm a Woman (Maria Muldaur cover of Christine Kittrell original):
On Broadway (The Drifters cover of George Benson original):
This could go on almost forever, especially with multiple covers of great songs, so I may do another post in the future. But for now, here is a bonus:
"On Broadway" was actually written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil in collaboration with Leiber and Stoller The Weil and Mann version was originally recorded by The Crystals and by The Cookies. The classic Drifters version was a revised score with amendments by Leiber and Stoller with lead guitar by Phil Spector. Interesting legacy of how 'hits' were made in 1963.
