Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out

Bessie Smith's 1929 recording is still the definitive rendition of "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," which was written by Jimmie Cox six years earlier. It is interesting that both versions preceded the Great Depression, when the lives of millionaires actually did end up down and out.
