UMKC School of Law offers an exciting opportunity to become part of a vibrant family law program as a Post-Doctoral Teaching Fellow. This Fellowship in Family Law provides the opportunity to refine practice skills and learn how to train others in these skills as well as in substantive areas of law. Our Fellows play a vital role in continuing to build a premier national family law program. Fellows may take advantage of the opportunity to earn a Masters of Law Degree in Child & Family Law (LL.M).
UMKC hosts a nationally recognized Child and Family Law program. It is one of only four family law programs to receive an A+ rating from National Jurist and preLaw Magazine. The School of Law offers J.D. and LL.M. students an emphasis in Child and Family Law, operates the Child and Family Services Clinic, the Guardian ad Litem Workshop and the Kansas City Youth Court and numerous field placement opportunities. Additionally, the School of Law publishes a national family law journal (the Journal of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers), provides an international study abroad program focused exclusively on family law, and hosts the annual ABA Family Law Advocacy Institute.
Fellows will directly supervise clinic students’ client cases, co-teach a clinical course, and engage in course planning and preparation with the other faculty members in the family law program. Fellows are responsible for case coverage during school breaks. The Fellowship offers law school graduates an opportunity to learn to teach law in a clinical setting, work on issues of child and family advocacy, and enhance their litigation skills.
This full-time Fellowship is a contractual appointment for up to two years and includes tuition assistance toward fifteen hours of the LL.M. degree and opportunities for course work, research, writing, and scholarship during the Fellowship term. Once hired, the LL.M and coursework components of the Fellowship are optional benefits.
Requirements for the position include a Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school, an active license to practice law in the State of Missouri, and the academic and professional credentials to be admitted to the LL.M. in Child and Family Law.
Qualifications for the position include excellent oral and written communication skills, familiarity with Jackson County family court procedures, a strong academic record and/or other indicia of high performance ability, a strong interest in teaching, and a commitment to work with low-income clients. Prior experience as a supervising attorney is preferred.
Salary is $40,000-45,000/year, depending on qualifications. The position includes full benefits, including health insurance and CLE requirements.
